Our Mission:
Casa Marianella welcomes displaced immigrants and promotes self-sufficiency by providing shelter
and support services.
Job Description:
The Medical Advocate will work with shelter case managers to support moms, dads and kids in our
family shelter. They will assess the needs of our new residents, connect them to care, enroll
residents in health coverage, and provide follow-up on more complicated medical cases. Their
primary role will be to meet with Family Shelter residents, however, they will also collaborate with the
staff at the Casa Marianella Benefits Clinic. The Medical Advocate plays a key role in equipping
residents with knowledge about the medical system. This knowledge will prepare residents to
navigate these systems in the future.
Activities:
– screen residents for medical needs and benefit eligibility
– accompany residents to walk-in clinic for urgent needs
– connect residents to health resources (mental health, reproductive health, vaccines, medical
needs, etc)
– enroll eligible residents in MAP, WIC, SNAP and Medicaid
– collaborate with other staff members to coordinate care
– help residents practice calling clinics to schedule an appointment
– ensure residents have bus accompaniment to their first appointment
– accompany residents to the pharmacy to practice picking up prescriptions
– accompany residents to the THHSC and WIC offices for advocacy as needed
– provide follow-up on more complicated medical cases (ie. explaining discharge notes, making sure
follow-up care is scheduled and transportation is planned, etc)
– explain practical tips about the medical system and medical bills
– collaborate with the Benefits Coordinators to stay up-to-date on benefits trends and problem-
solving strategies
– follow up on benefits applications
-occasionally assist previous residents with high-need medical cases in healthcare navigation (ie.
home visits, MAP applications, practice scheduling and getting to appointments, etc)
– follow up with clients and case managers to ensure medical needs are being successfully met in a
timely way
– attend weekly staff meetings and case management meetings
– track client information and maintain updated case notes
– participate in staff shifts that includes answering phones, enforcing rules, processing donations,
managing the shelter mail and trash, and responding to client requests
Qualifications:
Casa Marianella is a vibrant and diverse community of newly arrived immigrants from many
countries. We value language access, flexibility, and awareness of the challenges immigrants face.
To provide the best services, the Family Shelter Medical Advocate must:
– be proficient in Spanish, French or Portuguese
– have experience and/or strong interest in working with immigrant communities
– be comfortable communicating with clients across different languages and cultures
– show adaptability and problem-solving skills
– have experience and/or strong interest in health, health equity, and accessibility
Pay and Benefits:
– $13.50/hr starting rate
– 2 weeks paid vacation per year
– 7 paid sick days per year

Schedule:
– flexible
– 40 hours per week split between the Family Shelter and off-site visits
