Casa Marianella welcomes displaced immigrants and promotes self-sufficiency by providing shelter and support services.
 
Job Description: 
The AmeriCorps Family Advocate helps newly arrived moms and kids who live in our shelter to create a step-by-step plan to reach their goals, navigate their new surroundings, and attain sustainable housing. They work individually and as a team to problem-solve and search for opportunities for our residents. The AmeriCorps Family Advocate participates in shelter shifts to maintain the shelter and provide support to the residents. These shifts include evening, holiday and weekend shifts. This role is staffed through our partner AmeriCorps programs. AmeriCorps provides training, professional development, a stipend of $23,800 per 11-month term, and health insurance. It also provides an education award of $6,895 upon program completion.
 
Activities:
– meet with assigned case management residents weekly
– communicate information, options and expectations to newly arrived shelter residents
– discuss the client’s housing goals and help them draft a step-by-step plan to achieve that goal
– help clients look for housing, visit apartments, apply and move
– gather furniture resources and kitchen donations and assist with the move-out process
– collaborate with the Child Advocate and other team members to coordinate care for the residents
– help clients practice getting to appointments (this includes helping them get to legal appointments in San Antonio)
– attend weekly staff and case management meetings
– track client information and maintain updated case notes
– participate in shelter shifts and operations (ie. organizing and distributing donations, phone calls and email responses, cleaning and waste management, resolving conflict, etc)
– help prep rooms and complete paperwork for new intakes
Qualifications:
Casa Marianella is a vibrant and diverse community of newly arrived immigrants from many countries. We value language access, flexibility, and awareness of the challenges immigrants face. To provide the best services, the AmeriCorps Family Advocate must:
– be proficient in Spanish, French or Portuguese
– have experience and/or strong interest in working with immigrant communities
– be comfortable communicating with clients across different languages and cultures
– show adaptability and problem-solving skills
– have a Bachelor’s Degree
 
Pay and Benefits:
– $23,800 for an 11 month term (equivalent of $14/hr)
– Health Insurance through AmeriCorps
– An education stipend of $6,895 
Schedule:
– 40/wk: 30 hours on-site shifts and case management, 10 hours off-site case management and remote work (ie. appointments, apartment visits, case notes, etc)
